Coronectomy of third molar: a reduced risk technique for inferior alveolar nerve damage.

چکیده
UNLABELLED Causing damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) when extracting lower third molars is due to the intimate relationship between the nerve and the roots of the teeth. When the proximity radiologic markers between the IAN and the root of the third molars are present, the technique of coronectomy can be proposed as an alternative to extraction to minimize the risk of nerve injury, with minimal complications. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Nerve injury after the extraction of the mandibular third molar is a serious complication. The technique of coronectomy can be proposed to minimize the risk.

Coronectomy of impacted mandibular third molars: A meta-analysis and systematic review of the literature
BACKGROUND Coronectomy is an alternative to complete removal of an impacted mandibular third molar. Most authors have recommended coronectomy to prevent damage to the inferior alveolar nerve during surgical extraction of lower third molars. The present study offers a systematic review and metaanalysis of the coronectomy technique. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic review and meta-analysis was...
متن کاملCoronectomy: a technique to protect the inferior alveolar nerve.
PURPOSE Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve when extracting lower third molars is often caused by the intimate relationship between the nerve and the roots of the teeth. The technique of coronectomy, or intentional root retention, may minimize this problem. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty-one patients underwent coronectomy on 50 lower third molars with follow-up of at least 6 months. The techniq...

OBJECTIVES The purpose of present study was to assess the surgical management of impacted third molar with proximity to the inferior alveolar nerve and complications associated with coronectomy in a series of patients undergoing third molar surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS The position of the mandibular canal in relation to the mandibular third molar region and mandibular foramen in the front pa...
متن کاملCoronectomy of a lower third molar in combination with vital pulp therapy
Coronectomy is a procedure that intentionally spares the vital root after removal of the crown of the lower third molar to avoid damage to the inferior alveolar nerve. Vital pulp therapy is one option for managing exposed pulp tissue to reduce the risk of pulpal inflammation or necrosis. Among various dental materials, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been successfully used for vital pulp t...
متن کاملEvaluation of Outcome Following Coronectomy for the Management of Mandibular Third Molars in Close Proximity to Inferior Alveolar Nerve.
INTRODUCTION Iatrogenic damage to Inferior Alveolar Nerve (IAN) is a significant risk factor following prophylactic or therapeutic removal of impacted mandibular third molar. The risk to IAN injury increases many fold, when the third molar root overlaps the nerve canal as identified by the radiographic imaging. Various methods like orthodontic assisted extraction, staged removal of tooth or cor...
